The clay monoprint technique uses a leather hard, stoneware clay bed called a “matrix” that sits within a 1/2 deep frame. The surface of the matrix its where color and design happen. Viscous china clay slip is mixed with universal tints and oxoides to create a wide variety of colors. Slips can then be painted onto the matrix or transfers can be made using newsprint. Each print pulled from a matrix reveals more and more of earlier layers.
Mark making can be done by carving away at the matrix to make patterns and texture, intentionally revealing layers or with chalk pastels grated over stencils.
Once a matrix has been worked to completion, a non woven fabric substrate is used to pull a print. As prints dry the colors get richer. 24 hours after they are dried and cured they prints are varnished and may be framed behind glass.
